When does migraine need preventive medication?
Preventive treatment is recommended when migraines occur 4 or more days per month, significantly interfere with daily activities, require frequent use of acute medications (increasing the risk of medication overuse headache), or are associated with complicated aura. Is migraine with aura different from regular migraine?
Migraine with aura carries a slightly higher risk of ischaemic stroke — particularly in younger women who smoke or use combined oral contraceptives. This combination should be discussed with a neurologist. The treatment of the migraine headache itself is similar. Complex aura (motor weakness, prolonged symptoms) warrants MRI and specialist review to exclude other diagnoses.
