Overview

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from an external force causing brain dysfunction — ranging from mild concussion to severe injury requiring life-saving neurosurgery. TBI is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Severity is classified by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS): mild (GCS 13–15), moderate (9–12), severe (3–8). Severe TBI requires immediate CT imaging, neurosurgical assessment, ICP monitoring and surgical decompression in the neuro-ICU, and early rehabilitation. At Medanta Hospital, Sector 50, Noida, Team Sushrut provides comprehensive TBI care — from emergency intervention to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation.

FAQ
What is a concussion and when is it dangerous?

A concussion is a mild TBI from a blow to the head, causing temporary disruption of brain function — confusion, headache, nausea, or brief loss of consciousness. Most concussions recover completely with rest. Warning signs requiring hospital evaluation include: prolonged confusion lasting more than an hour, repeated vomiting, severe or worsening headache, one-sided weakness or speech difficulty, seizure, or loss of consciousness more than a few minutes.

What is ICP monitoring and when is it used?

Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring involves placing a small probe through the skull into the brain tissue or ventricle to measure pressure continuously. It is used in patients with severe TBI (GCS ≤8) to detect dangerous pressure rises that signal need for intervention. Target ICP is less than 20 mmHg with a cerebral perfusion pressure above 60 mmHg. Dr. Marda's neuroanesthesiology and neuro-ICU team at Medanta Noida manages ICP monitoring and medical therapy.

What is post-concussion syndrome?

Post-concussion syndrome is a cluster of symptoms persisting for weeks to months after a concussion — including headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, fatigue, and mood changes. It affects approximately 15–30% of concussion patients. Management involves graded return to activity, headache treatment, vestibular rehabilitation, and neuropsychological support. Neurology team at Team Sushrut manages post-concussion syndrome at Medanta Noida.
