Overview

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a spine surgical procedure that removes a damaged or herniated cervical disc from the front of the neck, decompresses the spinal cord or nerve roots, and fuses adjacent vertebrae using a cage and plate for stability. ACDF is indicated for cervical disc herniation causing radiculopathy or myelopathy when conservative management has not adequately relieved symptoms. At Medanta Hospital, Sector 50, Noida, Dr. Yashpal Singh Bundela (MCh Neurosurgery) and Dr. Manish Vaish perform ACDF with intraoperative neuromonitoring for maximized safety.

FAQ
How long does ACDF surgery take?

A single-level ACDF typically takes 1–2 hours. Two-level ACDF takes approximately 2–3 hours. The patient is usually mobilised the same day or the next morning.

What is the difference between ACDF and cervical disc replacement?

ACDF fuses the treated vertebrae, eliminating movement at that level. Cervical disc replacement preserves motion at the treated level using an artificial disc. Both achieve similar decompression. Dr. Bundela at Team Sushrut discusses which option suits each patient's age, activity level, and disc anatomy.

How long before I return to work after ACDF?

Office-based workers can typically return to work in 2–4 weeks. Physically demanding jobs require 6–8 weeks or longer. Neck exercises and physiotherapy after surgery accelerate recovery.
